CBS Philly profiles RHD’s Center for Creative Works earning spot in NY Outsider Art Fair

CBS Philly featured RHD’s Center for Creative Works, a unique creative arts program for people with intellectual disabilities. Center For Creative Works artists have been accepted to the NY Outsider Art Fair, the nation’s biggest and most prestigious showcase for outsider artists. CBS Philly’s Natasha Brown visited CCW for a story titled “Special Creative Arts Program Allowing Artists With Intellectual Challenges To Develop Their Talents”

It’s a unique, creative day program for people with intellectual challenges. Many of them are artists with work featured in museums and galleries and this weekend, some will be showing their work at a very prestigious art show in New York City.
Vibrant and original pieces of art are being brought to life at the Center for Creative Works in Wynnewood.
The progressive art studio features the work of as many as 80 artists who are busy honing their craft.
“All of our artists here have intellectual disabilities,” the center’s director, Lori Bartol, said. “We’re really creating an opportunity for people to build themselves as artists not despite their intellectual disabilities but within that.”

The New York Outsider Art Fair is the nation’s biggest and most prestigious showcase for outsider artists. After an extensive vetting process that began last June, the Center for Creative Works is one of 68 art galleries from nine countries selected to show work by outsider artists. Outsider art is created by self-taught or naïve art makers who are not typically part of the artistic establishment.

The Center for Creative Works is a unique, creative day service program with a focus on arts and arts based skill-building, education, in-house generated vocational opportunities and community involvement for people with developmental/intellectual disabilities. RHD founded the founded the program in 1972 as a vocational training program, and transitioned it to an art program in 2010.
