COSTAR Residential Systems
RHD COSTAR (Creating Opportunities Supporting Tenacious Adults in Recovery) serves adults living with severe mental health challenges that impair their daily functioning in the community. These individuals have extensive histories of acute services and require a structured setting due to their lack of success in community environments. Some individuals exhibit acute behaviors that require one-to-one staffing twenty-four hours a day, while others need one staff person on duty at all times. Although many residents aspire to move to less structured settings, medical conditions, aging, and care-dependency challenges often prevent them. Many residents also present with a dual diagnosis of mental health disorders and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).
RHD COSTAR aims to support individuals in strengthening coping mechanisms to manage stress and behavioral challenges while improving independent living skills that allow for decreased staffing needs and the potential to transition to less structured environments. Residential managers and staff employ a person-centered approach, incorporating each individual’s strengths to modify behavior. Staff provide modeling and coaching of adaptive behaviors paired with behavior reinforcement. They also teach participants behavioral skills focused on enhancing motivation to apply these skills to specific life challenges. RHD COSTAR collaborates with participants to work toward recovery goals through structured recovery planning. It wraps formal and natural supports around each individual to increase self-efficacy, community integration, and independence.
