New Beginnings in the News

New Beginnings member programs are achieving some remarkable things. In the past year alone, here are just a few of their headline-making accomplishments:

  • 2007 has been a year of national recognition for Hives for Lives. President George Bush and Call to Service Award winners Molly and Carly met President George W. Bush and received the President's Call to Service Award! This award is given to volunteers who have done outstanding work to help change the lives of others. Hives for Lives was also selected as one of ten youth projects to receive the TA Barron Prize for youth enterprises dedicated to social and environmental enterprises.

  • TM Productions Tigerman was profiled on the front page of The Philadelphia Inquirer in December, 2002, for its work in the Philadelphia Public Schools through its "Tiger Man" nonviolence program.

  • Philadelphia Public School Notebook broke a story on the Philadelphia Public Schools’ kindergarten suspensions in its Winter, 2003, issue that was picked up by The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and distributed around the nation via the Associated Press. This article has been credited with prompting changes in the District’s use of social service interventions for its young students.

  • Ann Guise, director of The Bright Lights Initiative, Bright Lights Initiative was one of three local “Women Making a Difference” honored by Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds-Brown in April, 2003.

  • The remarkable rebirth of Community Accountants received front-page coverage in PA Nonprofit Report in Fall, 2002.
