A senior project at Cabrini College that paired college students with homeless men and women at a local residential facility was an experience the students won’t soon forget, and produced an art exhibit to remember.
“Abundance of Basics,” an art exhibit showcasing the work produced as part of Cabrini College student Megan McSloy’s senior capstone project, will be featured Dec. 6 at 6:30 pm at the Grace and Joseph Gorevin Fine Arts Gallery, on the second floor of the Holy Spirit Library at Cabrini College. The event is the result of a partnership between Cabrini College and the
Coordinated Homeless Outreach Center, where students and CHOC clients collaborated to put into words and images what was most important in their lives. Genny O’Donnell, the director at CHOC, who worked to capture the results in artwork, and the result is the “Abundance of Basics” exhibit.
“It comes from people deciding what’s important to them, what matters to them, what they like,” O’Donnell said. “When they see themselves, and how they want themselves to be seen, in what matters to them instead of the situation they’re in, sometimes that’s how a person is able to lift themselves out of that situation.”
McSloy said the artwork is exciting to see, but more important is the backstory behind it.
“Students and the people at CHOC interacting and bonding over the artwork, that’s the best part,” McSloy said. “I’m really proud of the of the work, and how so many people contributed to it. It’s a project where people who normally probably wouldn’t have gotten involved – including myself – found a reason to get involved. It’s raised awareness and brought people together.”
“Abundance of Basics” is Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 pm at Grace and Joseph Gorevin Fine Arts Gallery;
