RHD prides itself on its commitment to creativity
and innovation. The corporation believes in person-centered
planning that strives to maximize consumers' opportunities
for decision-making and participation, and empowers each person
to enjoy the chance to help direct his or her own life.
RHD believes in helping consumers realize
their dreams; that philosophy pays off in examples
like these:
Francis—a
consumer who was born blind and with mental retardation-had always
wanted to mow the lawn. Some creative RHD staff members dedicated
themselves to helping him find a way to achieve this unlikely
dream, and experimented with a number of systems in search of
one that would enable him to guide himself around the yard with
the lawnmower. Their efforts were successful: Francis now mows
the lawn on his own with the help of an inventive "rope system."
Tom—a
lifelong-institutionalized consumer, worked hard to gain the skills
he needed to live on his own. Soon after leaving institution,
however, Tom began insisting that he wanted to return. Through
conversations with Tom, RHD staff members learned that, above
all, he missed his job in the institution's textiles shop. The
staff members helped Tom find a job as a weaving demonstrator
at a historical site frequented by tourists. He was able to continue
doing the work he enjoyed while helping to support himself and
becoming a valued contributor to the community.
Another
consumer—a man with mental retardation and
autism and a talented musician, has become a regular at a local
nightspot's open-mike night. RHD staff members helped him learn
to function in this mainstream setting by modeling and facilitating
the social interaction that now allows him to do what he loves most.
RHD believes in its consumers'
ability to realize their dreams
and direct the course of their own
lives. Supporting each person every step of the
way is inherent in the corporation's mission.
