RHD's Philly Youth Poetry Movement will be featured on CNN’s "Black in America" with Soledad O’Brien Dec. 9.
Drexel University will host an advance screening of the new documentary Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium in the Bossone Research Center. The hour-long documentary, part of a series moderated by O'Brien exploring colorism and identity, follows two 17-year-olds, Becca Khalil and Nayo Jones, on their journeys to find their racial identities. Jones is a member of RHD's Philly Youth Poetry Movement, which gives young people their voice in an effort to promote social change, cultural and ethnic diversity and positive self-esteem.
Among other Philly Youth Poetry Movement poets and staffers featured in the documentary is Perry "Vision" DiVirgilio, PYPM artistic director. DiVirgilio will appear on a panel discussion following the Drexel screening along with O'Brien, Dr. Yaba Blay, assistant teaching professor for Africana Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel University and consulting producer for CNN’s “Black in America”; Michaela Angela Davis, writer, image activist, and creator of MAD Free; Danyel Smith, former editor-in-chief of Billboard magazine; and Dr. Donald Tibbs, associate professor of law at Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University.
The documentary is scheduled to air on CNN on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
