RHD wins 2010 gold medal in Philadelphia Business Journal's "Best Places to Work" contest

10/15/2010 2:56:53 PM

Resources for Human Development is the 2010 gold medal winner in the Best Places to Work extra-large companies category in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s annual contest.

The Best Places to Work program ranks the top employers in the Delaware Valley as determined by scores given to employers by their own workers during an anonymous survey administered by an independent third party. Employees ranked their company on several questions related to team effectiveness, trust with co-workers, alignment with goals and trust in senior leaders, as well as respect, recognition and benefits.

RHD, a national human services nonprofit founded in 1970, is headquartered in Philadelphia and employs 1,709 people in the Philadelphia area. Comcast Corp. and Penn Medicine took the silver and bronze medals in the extra-large company category.

“I feel like I am a part of something greater than just myself,’’ junior billing coordinator Lisa Figueroa told the Philadelphia Business Journal. “To know that I am valued even for the minimal things I do, to the maximum. To know that we are an organization that strives for betterment and uplifting in people’s lives.”

This is the sixth year the Philadelphia Business Journal has held the Best Places to Work contest. Even in a troubled economy, Business Journal special reports editor Sonja Sherwood said the scores for the area’s top companies remained consistently high.

“Great companies have strong cultures deep in their DNA,’’ Sherwood said. “The traits that make a company great are resilient regardless of the passage of time or what is happening in the economy.”

RHD CEO Bob Fishman called the award “a wonderful honor, and certainly a nice affirmation of the work we do, and the kind of corporation we want to be.”

“RHD was conceived and developed as an experiment about creating healthy workplace communities,” Fishman said. “If employees are given the freedom to do so, they can create a world of possibility that releases energy and creativity. When you have that, obstacles can be overcome, problems can be solved, and people’s lives can change.

“We’re absolutely blessed to have a group of extraordinary people here who’ve done so much to make it work – and who’ve made RHD the best place to work.”
